1. A typical Noise Solution intervention takes place over a 10 week period. We pair a music producer with someone, go to them wherever they are and ask them what would you like to create. It’s about allowing the participant to co create a project around the music important to them. Giving them a sense of control<\/p>\n

2. Musicans are less daunting to engage with than professionals, for both participants and their families. By giving them a choice about what we create, how we capture that creative journey and who we share their digital story with we are able to add to that sense of control for the participant.<\/p>\n

3. In the first session a questionnaire, using positively framed questions that don’t problematise or medicalise the process is completed. This is the only element for the participant that isn’t foccussed on the music – just 7 questions that give us a validated and national benchmark well-being score from which to guage our impact.<\/p>\n

4. Every session involves the musican and participant co-creating a digital story capturing the success of\u00a0of every session. This usually involves video reflections, the music created and photo’s capturing the thoughts and reactions to the process. This capturing and sharing is every bit as important to the process as the music making itself. A link into the digital story (password protected) is then sent to everyone the particiapnt has identified as important. Here they can easily engage, comment and co-create the positive journey.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0As well as the digital story, after each session a short report goes back to\u00a0referring professionals involved, to ensure everyone is aware of what is working, facilitating communication between professionals and highlighting any areas that may require extra support.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0In the next session the first thing the participant can see is commentary from Noise Solution and the participants family or keyworkers on last weeks session. This third party validation is vital in impacting on the participants sense of success and creates a positive digital community around the particiapant’s success – rather than focussing on deficits<\/p>\n

7. Appropriate progression routes are identified between the\u00a0musician and participant i.e. education, voluntary or continued music making.\u00a0Musicians’ liaise with family and professionals to ensure that by the end of the 10 week intervention the support to enable progression is in place.<\/p>\n

8. By week 6 sessions are moved to a commercial recording studio, school or other appropriate space to encourage progression, modelling progression for theparticipant and also their family \u2013 dependent on the participant’s situation.<\/p>\n

9. If appropriate, throughout the process Arts Award qualifications are completed. This is agreed at the start of the programme with all evidence collated in the blog.<\/p>\n

10. By week 10 appropriate progression routes plus any support needs required to make that successful will have been identified. A final well-being questionnaire is completed and results compared with week one. A synopsis of impacts, recorded qualitatively (through the digital story) and quantitatively (from the questionnaires) is produced and shared with professionals.<\/p>\n

Evidence for our approach<\/h2>\n

In February 2016, Noise Solution was awarded funding from the Cabinet Office\u2019s Impact Readiness Fund to work with The Social Investment Consultancy to measure our social impact. The result of this was a robust, evidenced impact report which shows Noise Solution has serious impact with the young people we work with.   • Informed by Self Determination Theory (Deci and Ryan), Noise Solution aims to facilitate the growth of participants feelings of Autonomy, Competency and Relatedness. These are the three accepted \u2018psychological needs\u2019 required for well-being to flourish.

  • We are interested in well-being because evidence informs us that if we impact on well-being we improve social, educational, health and engagement outcomes for participants. One meta study equates the positive impacts of improved well-being being equal to the negative impacts of smoking (Veenhoven, 2008). We\u2019ve established that we are statistically significant in impacting on well-being.

  • Our presentation as musicians rather than social work or mental health professionals aids engagement and builds trust with both participants\u2019 and their families, sidestepping issues around power hierarchies.

  • The relationship at the heart of any engagement, whether therapeutic, clinical, or educational, is the number one indicator of success across academic literature's.

  • Participants co-create with musicians their musical journeys increasing feelings of Autonomy. With music sessions creating quick tangible feelings of success in a skill deemed societally complicated (creating music) impacting upon confidence.

  • The capture and sharing of participants success via their digital story externalises their success, reflecting it back at them, scaffolding their ability to process and internalise that success (Impacting on feelings of Competence).

  • As people, that participants have identified as important, comment on their digital story their positive external validation embeds a perception for participants as being successful. Challenging negative labels they or others have attached to them.
